NoseRub

Decentralisation is just simple and you can see it by making three clicks:

1. Visit my NoseRub-ID on Identoo: identoo.com/dirk.olbertz
2. There, click on my contact othylmann (id.thylmann.net/othylmann)
3. There, click on his contact agenturblog (identoo.com/agenturblog)

That's just a seemless browsing through a three-person social network that resides on two different servers.

I like it.

I just packed and uploaded a new version of NoseRub. Two additions made it into the source this evening and already to Identoo.com.

First, the old Media Filter was replaced by Photo, Video and Audio. After adding Vimeo and last.fm to the list of supported services, the Media-View just made no sense any more and needed to get a bit clearer.

The second change is more of an administrative issue, but several actions (in fact, currently only syncing contacts) can now be called from the shell, which makes it easy to have cronjobs for those admin tasks.

I'm currently working on caching all the RSS-Feeds to the database and not try to fetch them every time you want to see a profile. This is currently the thing that massively slows down the user experience on Identoo.com. Enhancing this shouldn't be too problematic, so I guess we will see a far improved version at the coming weekend - maybe even earlier...

So, if you want to host NoseRub on your own server, go to NoseRub.com/download and download the archive. Version 0.2 alpha was downloaded 500 times, which is just great and I have to admit that I will watch the counter ticking for the new release...

On Identoo.com, the first official NoseRub service started. Everyone can register, we still know of some bugs, but overall everything should work out.

Beside going online, we added two new services: Vimeo.com and Last.fm, both come with an import routine for your contacts. We also updated the Twitter.com service to have a contact import there, too.

If you want to add someone with a NoseRub-ID from Identoo.com as your contact, you need to enter identoo.com/dirk.olbertz (if you want to add me) as NoseRub-ID for that contact. From then on, you will automatically get all updates from that contact delivered to your network overview page.

After testing publicly in the next couple of days, this version will be made available as release for download at NoseRub.com. You currently can also just use the development version from our code repository at NoseRub.com/Contribute.

Overworking the design of our network page will be next. And of course the ability to access your data through RSS and JSON.

Just a few minutes ago, NoseRub.com got relaunched. My thanks go to Alexander Kaiser who also did a great job on the logo.

The application itself will get a new design as well and right now looks very promising. Until then, the Tour trough NoseRub remains empty, because we want to show off the new design, of course!
